Thank a Ref Campaign in Minnesota

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is looking to show appreciation for its contest officials. All MSHSL member schools are encouraged to participate in the League's "Thank A Ref" campaign.

A kind word of thanks toward officials for all they do is the sole purpose of this endeavor.

Without officials, games and contests cannot be held. Officials play an integral part in the events enjoyed by high school students, parents and the entire community. While officials are paid for their service, they put in a lot of time in preparation, travel and expenses. They perform an important job at a relatively low level of pay.

Officiating at the high school level is an avocation, not a vocation. Read more about the effort here.

AD Helps Subdue Shooting Suspect

A high school activities director - who helped detain a shooting suspect at his school after the principal was injured - had taken part in active shooter training. Joey Struwe, Activities Director at Harrisburg High School in South Dakota, helped an assistant principal and football coach restrain a shooter last week.

As reported by the Argus Leader, a shooter entered the school and struggled with Kevin Lein, the school's principal, before shooting Lein in the arm. Struwe and assistant football coach Ryan Rollinger then worked together to restrain the shooter until police arrived.

October is National HS Activities Month

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has designated the month of October as National High School Activities Month to help schools throughout the nation promote the values inherent in high school athletic and performing arts activities.

The month's goal is to increase the public's awareness of the values and needs of interscholastic activity programs.

"Through National High School Activities Month, we have an opportunity to reflect on our participation as well as the participation of our children. Our nation must continue to support these programs and the life skills they provide America's youth," said NFHS Executive Director Bob Gardner.

Materials for the 2015 Activities Month, including activity ideas, flyers and testimonials, can be found here.
